China’s Domestic Trade in 2025: Digital Innovation, Green Transition and Regional Synergy

As the core of China’s “dual circulation” strategy, domestic trade has emerged as the primary engine driving economic growth in 2025. With its vast market scale, accelerating digital transformation, and advancing green initiatives, China’s domestic trade landscape is undergoing a profound restructuring. The Ministry of Commerce projects that China’s total retail sales of consumer goods will exceed 50 trillion yuan ($7.2 trillion) in 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 5.5% over the past four years, solidifying its position as the world’s second-largest consumer market. This remarkable expansion is accompanied by transformative changes in trade patterns, driven by digital innovation, green development, and regional coordination.

Digital Technology Reshaping Domestic Trade Infrastructure
The most striking transformation in China’s domestic trade lies in the rapid digitization of supply chains and retail networks. In 2025, the country’s top 100 online retailers achieved a combined sales volume of 2.17 trillion yuan, marking a 13.6% year-on-year growth, according to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association. This growth is fueled by innovative business models and technological advancements that have revolutionized the entire trade ecosystem from warehousing to last-mile delivery.
Smart logistics has become the backbone of this digital transformation. Cainiao’s Dongguan Smart Sorting Center, one of the most advanced in China, demonstrates how technology is redefining efficiency standards. Equipped with state-of-the-art automated systems, the center can process packages at a rate of over 6,000 units per hour using six-sided scanning technology and remote security inspection, reducing manual handling from seven to four steps. This technological upgrade has enabled the center to achieve a remarkable 4-hour turnaround from warehouse entry to shipment, significantly improving delivery efficiency.

Instant retail has emerged as the fastest-growing segment in China’s digital trade landscape, with projected market exceeding 1.4 trillion yuan in 2025 and a five-year compound growth rate of 25%. This “minute-level delivery” service model has fundamentally reshaped consumer expectations and accelerated the digital transformation of traditional brick-and-mortar stores. The penetration of online sales has expanded beyond traditional categories like apparel and daily necessities to include home appliances, sporting goods, and pharmaceuticals, driven by government policies such as the “old-for-new” appliance replacement program and growing health consciousness among consumers.
The digital trade ecosystem is increasingly dominated by consumer goods enterprises, which account for 63 of the top 100 online retailers in 2025, including 24 home appliance and furniture companies, 15 food and beverage enterprises, and 14 household and personal care brands. This diversified structure reflects the deep integration of digital technology across all sectors of China’s domestic trade.

Green Transition Transforming Trade Value Chains
Parallel to digital transformation, China’s domestic trade is undergoing a significant green transition, supported by a comprehensive product carbon footprint management system. As of the end of 2024, China had issued over 70 national standards and more than 100 industry standards for carbon footprint accounting, covering key sectors including basic energy, raw materials, new energy products, and transportation, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s 2025 progress report.
This robust standardization framework has laid the foundation for a green trade ecosystem, helping enterprises respond to international carbon-related trade barriers while advancing China’s “dual carbon” goals (carbon peak and carbon neutrality). The carbon footprint management system covers the entire product lifecycle, from raw material extraction to production, transportation, and disposal, providing a scientific basis for measuring and reducing carbon emissions across supply chains.
The green transition is not only driven by policy but also by market demand. Consumers are increasingly prioritizing environmentally friendly products, prompting enterprises to adopt greener practices throughout their operations. The home appliance industry, in particular, has seen significant growth in online sales of energy-efficient products due to supportive policies and changing consumer preferences. This shift towards sustainability is creating new opportunities for businesses that can integrate environmental considerations into their value chains.

Regional Coordination Promoting Balanced Development
China’s domestic trade development is becoming increasingly balanced across different regions, thanks to targeted policies and improved infrastructure connectivity. A notable indicator of this progress is the narrowing gap between
